The Covid-19 pandemic was a strict teacher. We grumbled through its lessons and shed tears due to its harsh discipline but we graduated with an appreciation for the knowledge it bestowed on us. As we were collectively made to face our mortality a hyper-focus was suddenly placed on an aspect of human existence that was much neglected. The importance of self care. With nothing but time, coupled with fear, people began to have a keener focus on their health, both physical and mental. A byproduct of this was a realisation from employers that healthier workers were happier workers and happier workers were (shock!) more productive. Thus as the pandemic neared its close and offices started opening up, the flexi-work system was adopted by many companies and quickly became in vogue as the benefits it presented to both employers and employees were clear for all to see. This adoption has seen some employees being given the freedom to work remotely exclusively and has given rise to a variety of alternative work spaces and services, one of which is the Virtual Office.
The term ‘Virtual Office’ was first used in 1982 in an article by John Markoff published in Info World magazine. It is a service that gives businesses a physical mailing address, phone service, and access to meeting and conference rooms on an as-needed basis. It allows businesses to have a professional presence without the need for a traditional office space and the overhead costs that come with it. In Markoff’s article he wrote, ‘In the future virtual office, workers will no longer be constrained by computer equipment or geographic location, according to this vision.’. The first of those constraints was tackled by the creation of personal computers and the second by internet connectivity, with this being the case it is a wonder how it has taken a lockdown for this to become a more widespread idea.
